This weekend (July 18th and 19th ) and will mark the long anticipated return of NASCAR to Portland International Raceway with the Bi-Mart Salute to the Troops 125 a part of the Camping World West Series . The NASCAR Camping World West Series(formerly Winston West) is recognized as one of the most important driver development series in the world. Since 1954, drivers such as the legendary Hershel McGriff,Kevin Harvick, Mark Martin, Kasey Kahne, and many of NASCAR’s other superstars have proved themselves in the West series. The West series last raced in Portland in 2000 at the old Portland Speedway, and the last time it raced on the road course at Portland International Raceway was in 1986. That race was won by Hershel McGriff, who remarkably will be on hand this year to defend his title at the age of 81! In support of the NASCAR Camping World Series, you will also see the Portland, Oregon based Great American Stockcar Series (GASS).These identically prepared NASCAR style stock cars will race twice during the weekend. Most will be driven by local drivers and feature local sponsors. Also on hand will be the historic cars of the Stock Car Race Series (SCRS). Retired Winston/Sprint Cup cars will be raced in anger twice over the weekend, appearing in their original paint schemes. Look for cars once driven by Jeff Gordon, Darrell Waltrip, Terry Labonte, Dale Jarrett, and Bill Elliott. The cars are always a crowd favorite at historic and vintage events, and will surely be in their element during this action packed weekend.
